How has HPV Prevalence Changed Since Introduction of Vaccine?
This study by Markowitz et al. (Pediatrics, 2016) examined the prevalence of HPV in women aged 14-34 years of age before and after the introduction of the quadrivalent HPV vaccine.
Cross-sectional Cohort Study
Cervicovaginal specimens from women aged 14-34 were analyzed for 4vHPV DNA (6, 11, 16, and 18) between 2003-2006 (vaccine era) and between 2009-2012 (post-vaccine era). In 2003-2006, 2587 cervicovaginal swab samples were adequate for DNA HPV typing. In 2009-2012, 2061 cervicovaginal swab samples were adequate for DNA HPV typing. From the pre-vaccine to vaccine era, prevalence of 4vHPV decreased from 11.5% to 4.3% (64% decrease) among women aged 14-19, and from 18.5% to 12.1% (34% decrease) amongst women aged 20-24. No decrease was found amongst older age groups. Vaccinated, sexually active women aged 14-24 had a lower prevalence of 4vHPV than those not vaccinated.
