There is a higher risk of neonatal death and adverse long-term neurological outcomes with umbilical cord pH <7, but below this threshold risks have not been further stratified

Lau et al. (Acta Obstetricia et Gynecologica Scandinavica, 2022) investigated the predictors of neonatal death and adverse long-term neurological outcomes among neonates born with umbilical arterial pH <7
Retrospective cohort study
Infants born >34 weeks of gestation
Between 2003 and 2017
Cord arterial pH <7 or base excess ≤−12 mmol/L at birth
Univariate and multivariate analyses used to estimate risks
Determination of possible predictors: Umbilical arterial pH | Base excess levels | Apgar scores | Mode of delivery | Gestational age | Small for gestational age | Birth in the era before the implementation of neonatal hypothermic therapy | Presence of a known sentinel event
