ACOG Opinion: Liability Related to Early Ob management in Gyn-Only Practices
There are practicing gynecologists who provide early pregnancy care during the first and early second trimesters. ACOG has updated its committee opinion and maintains that “early pregnancy care to be within the scope of gynecology and gynecologic practice.”
The opinion further asserts that those practicing gyn-only care can still “properly” provide care for patients in early pregnancy, including
Early pregnancy failure
Spontaneous or elective abortion
Early prenatal care
Considering the above, ACOG addresses liability concerns and states
Liability insurers that provide coverage for gynecology-only practices should provide coverage for clinical practice activities that involve the management of first-trimester and early second-trimester pregnancy and its complications
