This study by Godoy-Izquierdo et al. (Menopause, 2017) explored outcomes of regular exercise amongst previously sedentary women postmenopause.
Previously sedentary postmenopausal women took part in a supervised, multicomponent, adapted exercise program for 20 weeks. Controls included women with sedentary and active lifestyles. After the program, indicators of cardio-metabolic status and fitness were assessed. The women in the intervention program experienced positive short and long-term changes in their physical and mental health and women’s health-related quality of life (HRQoL), a measure of perceived health over time, also increased. The women’s cardio-metabolic status, fitness, weight, BMI, cardio-respiratory fitness, and flexibility all improved. These improvements were long-lasting, and were maintained up to the 12-month follow-up. Adoption of an active lifestyle should be encouraged based on this data.
