Do Higher Serum FSH Levels Reduce Risk of Diabetes in Postmenopausal Women?

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE:

  • There is limited data on the relationship between FSH levels and diabetes in women, especially those over 50 years of age
  • Cheung et al. (Maturitas, 2018) examined the association between serum FSH and diabetes risk in postmenopausal women

METHODS:

  • Database search and meta-analysis
    • Women who participated in the Hong Kong Osteoporosis Study age ≥55 at baseline
  • Studies included those that had
    • Data on serum FSH and incident diabetes
    • A mean follow-up of 10.7 years

RESULTS:

  • 1,274 participants were included
    • 60 cases of incident diabetes
  • Serum FSH was significantly associated with reduced risk of diabetes
    • Hazard ratio [HR] per standard deviation (SD) increase: 0.66 (95% CI, 0.48-0.89; P = 0.007)
  • The result persisted after adjusting for confounding
    • HR per SD increase: 0.70 (95% CI: 0.51-0.97; P = 0.030)
  • In a fixed effect meta-analysis of two studies
    • Serum FSH > 50 IU/L was associated with reduced risk of diabetes
    • HR 0.56 (95% CI, 0.36-0.85; P = 0.006)

CONCLUSION:

  • FSH levels is associated with reduced risk of diabetes
