Bladder Wall Thickness to Diagnose Detrusor Overactivity?
This study by Latthe et al. (BJOG, 2017) sought to examine the effectiveness of using ultrasound measurement of bladder wall thickness instead of urodynamics in diagnosing detrusor overactivity.
Prospective Cohort Study
687 women (mean age 52.7 years) with overactive bladders were recruited, 664 of whom received both ultrasounds and urodynamics tests. Detrusor overactivity was diagnosed in 60% of the women. Bladder wall thickness had a specificity of 62% and sensitivity of 43%, indicating that bladder wall thickness is not an effective replacement for urodynamics in diagnosing detrusor overactivity.
