Fish Oil During Pregnancy: Reduction of Asthma Risk in Offspring?
This study by Bisgaard et al. (NEJM, 2016) aimed to determine if ingesting n-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFAs) during pregnancy reduced the prevalence of wheezing in offspring.
Randomized Clinical Trial (RCT)
736 women at 24 weeks gestation were given 2.4 grams daily of either fish oil or olive oil (control). Their children were then watched for five years to determine rates of asthma, wheezing, and respiratory infections. A total of 695 children were included in the final study. The rate of persistent wheeze or asthma amongst children of the mothers who received treatment was 16.9%, while the amongst the control group it was 23.7%. Treatment with fish oil also decreased risk of lower respiratory tract infections (31.7% vs. 39.1%).
