Bioidentical hormones are typically plant-derived hormones, created synthetically in a laboratory and designed to be similar or structurally identical to those produced by the human body. The ACOG document addresses the ongoing confusion regarding bioidentical hormones as some are FDA-regulated while others are not. Currently, no custom compounded hormone formulations are FDA approved. The document emphasizes that FDA-approved menopausal hormone therapies should be prescribed vs compounded bioidentical hormones.
