Compared to never smokers, former smokers who quit <45 years saw these rate ratios attenuated
Hispanic: RR 1.15 (95% CI, 1.03 to 1.28)
Non-Hispanic Black: 1.16 (95% CI, 1.07 to 1.25)
Non-Hispanic White: 1.11 (95% CI, 1.08 to 1.15)
Other non-Hispanic race and ethnicity: RR 1.17 (95% CI, 0.99 to 1.39)
Men and women from diverse race and ethnicity backgrounds saw an approximately 2-fold increase in the rate of all-cause mortality if they were current smokers, compared to never smokers
The authors state
Quitting smoking before age 45 years was associated with reductions of approximately 90% of the excess mortality associated with continued smoking, and quitting at ages 45 to 64 years was associated with reductions of approximately 66% of this excess risk
