Do Selective Dietary Supplements Help with Postpartum Mood?
This study by Yowlati et al. (PNAS, 2017) sought to determine if taking supplements designed to counter elevated monoamine oxidase A (MAO-A) levels during postpartum on days 3-5 postpartum could decrease the incidence of postpartum blues, and thereby decrease risk of postpartum depression.
Randomized Clinical Trial (RCT)
41 women completed the trial. 21 received a dietary supplement made of 2g tryptophan, 10g tyrosine, and blueberry juice with blueberry extract, and 20 did not receive a supplement (control). Severity of postpartum blues were quantified by determining the elevation in depressed mood on a visual analog scale using the sad mood induction procedure. Following the mood induction procedure, the women in the control group experienced an increase in depressed mood, while no such increase was seen among the women who took the supplement. This dietary supplement was effective in erasing vulnerability to depressed mood during the peak of postpartum blues.
