If you wish to receive acknowledgment for completing this activity, please complete the post-test and evaluation. Upon registering and successfully completing the post-test with a score of 100% and the activity evaluation, your certificate will be made available immediately.

Since the 1960’s the Masters and Johnson sexual response cycle has served as the paradigm for sexual functioning. This model is essentially linear, with an initial spontaneous stage of desire leading to arousal, a plateau of heightened arousal which peaks briefly and releases in the experience of orgasm(s) to be followed by resolution. A new model, developed by Rosemary Basson in 2002 offer a different perspective that is more reflective of most women’s experience and can be better used to help women manage issues with low sexual desire.
In the new model
Sexual stimuli are the initial point of entry
A woman might choose to introduce stimuli for many reasons, for example those listed below and the decision may be conscious or unconscious
Many women who do not experience spontaneous desire will describe many other reasons for initiating or agreeing to sexual encounters, including but not limited to:
Wanting to be emotionally close or to express love
Increasing a sense of commitment and bonding
Shared physical pleasure
Soothing of oneself or one’s partner, or a form of relaxation
Validation of one’s sense of attractiveness
Once the stimuli are introduced and arousal is experienced the cycle begins
Additional stimuli are included (kissing, touching, fantasy, conversations) and with continuation of the stimuli enhancing arousal, arousal grows until ultimately the woman feels desire
Sexual desire is responsive not spontaneous
With the continuation of the combination of desire, arousal and stimuli, the experience, if successful concludes with an orgasm and resolution
Assuming a successful conclusion, the cycle is primed to repeat
How likely the cycle is to repeat is dependent on the success of the experience as a whole
The Masters and Johnson model of sexual response can lead to mismanagement of the condition of “low desire” as many women do not experience spontaneous desire
